We will meet at Istanbul Airport as pre-arranged and take a convenient domestic flight to Izmir. Upon arrival, a private transfer will take us to the ancient city of Ephesus. This fully guided biblical journey ensures you make the most of every moment over the next 7 days.
Founded by Ionian prince Androclos in the 11th century B.C., Ephesus was once a major port and trading hub of the ancient world. Located about 80 km south of modern-day Izmir, today you will explore:
The Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
The Great Theatre, seating 25,000 people
The Library of Celsus
Marble streets, agora, latrines, brothel, and more
You’ll also visit the House of the Virgin Mary, believed to be her final residence.
Next, we travel east to Laodicea, near today’s Denizli. Once a thriving city under the ministry of Epaphras, Laodicea is remembered in Revelation: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”
From Laodicea, we head north to Hierapolis, a city famous for its healing waters and spiritual heritage. We will rest here overnight.
We begin the day in Hierapolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city where Saint Philip was martyred in the 1st century AD. Much of the ancient city remains remarkably intact. Highlights include:
The Roman Theatre, built under Emperor Hadrian, with a stunning 300-foot façade
The impressive Necropolis, known as the “City of the Dead,” with hundreds of preserved tombs and inscriptions
Ancient hot springs, which made Hierapolis a healing center as early as 200 BC
We’ll also visit the surreal white travertine pools of Pamukkale, a natural wonder that must be seen to be believed.
We continue north to visit three of the Seven Churches of Revelation:
Philadelphia – See remains of the Byzantine basilica and city walls (Revelation 3:12)
Sardis – Once capital of Lydia and birthplace of coinage; Jesus said: “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.”
Thyatira – A wealthy trade city, known for its production of purple-dyed cloth
We end the day in Pergamon, where we’ll stay overnight and prepare to explore this ancient city the next day.
Today, we visit Pergamon, one of the Seven Churches of Revelation, often referred to as “the seat of Satan” (Revelation 2:13) due to its pagan temples and emperor worship.
Once a powerful and wealthy city, Pergamon was known for its grand marble structures and cultural influence. Highlights include:
The Asclepion, one of the earliest known medical centers
The Temple of Athena and Temple of Zeus
The Great Library, which once held over 200,000 parchment scrolls
The Temple of Trajan, theatre, and gymnasium
The Red Basilica, later converted into a Christian church
Next, we visit Smyrna, another church mentioned in Revelation. This early Christian community was heavily persecuted for refusing to worship the Roman Emperor. The city’s resilience and faith are still remembered today.
We end the day in Izmir, where we will rest before continuing our journey.
